Two ‘Rs’ of Holy Week: Religiosity or Relationship!

The Holy Week in the Philippines!

Here in the Philippines during the Holy Week season we try to be very very very religious!

For 7 days we become conscious of God. We intentionally evade doing our usual petty sinful practices. We try not to say foul words, don’t go to sin places, stop eating certain food and change our wardrobe to more conservative styles. We do religious disciplines like mumbling more prayers a day, beyond our usual three meals prayers; visit more churches for a week to cover a year of not going to one  and we try to be good, really very very good.

But then after the Holy Week we go back to our usual self of practicing occasional piety. We become religious again only when we have problems and challenges to overcome and when we have special concerns.

Do you know that our Heavenly Father is hurt by that?

He doesn’t want you to be religious on a certain time of the year or once a week or on special seasons only! He wanted a CONTINUOUS RELATIONSHIP with you through Jesus!

That is the reason why He loves to hear the statements of King David, saying:

“Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.” Psalm 23: 6

“Your statutes are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart. My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end.” Psalm 119:

And St. Paul’s statement, “…pray continually…” (1 Thessalonians 5L17) implying a continuous connection to Him!

God wants a persistent RELATIONSHIP with you and not religious practices on a particular time of the year only, like the Holy Week!

Let me end this blog with a big question: HOW ARE YOU RELATED TO HIM TODAY?
